HISTORY OF COMICS MD AND IT'S NAME
Before Comics MD was a brick and mortar store we started out on eBay in the year 2000 selling comic books and original comic art. We needed an eBay screen name and since we sold comics and we were in Maryland, Comics MD was a natural. During this first year we also developed our first website, www.comicsmd.com. In early 2001 a local store, Beetle Comics was closing it’s doors after many years of serving Southern Maryland. Now, for some reason we thought it was a good idea to purchase this failing business that was located in Waldorf, MD and move it to the back of an old run down building on a side street in Accokeek, Maryland. Accokeek, a small town with one traffic light, is located 8 miles west of Waldorf. At the time Accokeek didn’t have a supermarket or a fast food restaurant. I think the newest building in Accokeek was the Italian arms company Beretta which had opened a factory in Accokeek in the 1970s.
Our new little store which was the size of a one car garage needed a name and since we had an eBay site and a website named Comics MD, we just went ahead and called our store Comics MD. I hated the name, I thought “Back Alley Comics” would have been nice since we were hidden behind one of the oldest buildings still standing in Accokeek but Comics MD was just easier. People laughed at us for opening a comic book shop in Accokeek but we had one thing going for us and that was a small group of loyal customers from Beetle Comics. I had never met such a wonderful, grateful, loyal group of people. These people were so supportive of Comics MD. They were happy that their long time comic book shop didn’t die but continued to live.
It didn’t take long before we outgrew our little store and started looking for a larger space. By this time Accokeek had gotten it’s first shopping center. We now had a new Food Lion, Burger King and a new Exxon Station with a Jerry’s Sub Shop. We checked to see if we could move into the new shopping center and again we were laughed at, as they weren’t interested in having a comic book shop there. Across the highway, RT 210, was a 2 story building everyone called the white elephant of Accokeek. No business would last in this location for more than 3 months. So we moved into it. It wasn’t bad enough we bought a business that was failing and for some reason thought we could make it work but now we move into a building that was known as a kiss of death. At the time we were thinking of changing the name of the store but we were so rushed in renovating the new building and moving from the old location we never got around to it.
Now in 2008, Comics MD is still here in Accokeek on RT 210. We grew from a local comic book shop to the area’s largest Comic Book and Gaming store. Our customer base comes from all around the area including Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Southern Virginia, Charles County, St Mary’s County, Calvert Count and our home Prince Georges County. We feel we are now another landmark of Accokeek and would never change the name Comics MD.
Comics MD would like to thank all our loyal customers that have supported our store over the years. Without our customers we would just be a building full of Comic Books and Games. It’s the customers that makes us a store. I would also like to thank Stephen, Chris, Adam, Ben, Cory, Carl and Brett for all their help over the years making Comics MD the great store that it is today. And most of all to our current guys, Brian, our store manager and who keeps this place going and Jimmy the best comic book counter guy in the business.
